Learning Spanish at Home or Abroad? Total immersion is the best way to learn Spanish. Total Immersion is also the way your learned your own language. As this may be difficult in your own country it would be best for you to go to a Spanish speaking country to learn Spanish. Fortunately Spanish is spoken in over 21 countries so you have a lot of choice of places to go. A combination of immersion and study is ideal. You could study in a class with other students, with a private teacher or by yourself, depending on how much motivation you have! To save you time and money it would be better to do some study before you go to the Spanish speaking country – even just to get the basics. You need some basics before you can start to speak! Try to find a native speaker of Spanish to teach you the correct pronunciation of the language before you even try to learn any Spanish words. This is SO important. You must learn correct Spanish pronunciation first as it will save you a lot of time, frustration, embarrassment and wasteful relearning at a later stage. Then start to learn everyday vocabulary words (look around you to see all the things in your daily life – food items, house items, clothing, etc). Next is some grammar for sentence structure and then you are ready to have a short conversation. A word of advice on study time – it is MUCH better to study 20 – 30 minutes a day rather than one two hour session per week. Commit yourself to study about 20 minutes to a half an hour a day. Try to find some native speakers to talk to, preferably, or other people learning Spanish. You might be able to find people in libraries, local language schools, internet cafes etc. A mixture of studying Spanish at home and then visiting or living in a Spanish speaking country is the best combination and should have you speaking confidently in three to six months.
